Guest Researcher Program

The Gothenburg Air and Climate Centre (GAC) runs a Guest Research Program for post-graduate researchers (Guest Research Fellow or Guest Professor) who wish to contribute to and participate in the work of the Centre. Guest Researchers may be associated with GAC as a whole or with one of the research groups or disciplines. Guest Researchers may engage in a wide range of activities organized within the Centre and they are expected to participate in and contribute to its collaborative research culture.

A. Guest Researchers’ Program Objectives

The Guest Researchers Program is intended:
• To actively contribute to the Centre’s research environment and postgraduate program.
• To develop and promote links with other institutions, governments and organizations in Sweden and overseas.
• To give researchers and doctoral students at GAC a chance to work with leading academics and professionals from Sweden and elsewhere.
• To give academics an opportunity to collaborate in joint research with colleagues at GAC.

B. Duration and Guest Researchers’ Contribution

The minimum time period for a stay is one week in order to meet with GAC members and to contribute to one or more of the following GAC activities:
• Collaborate on a research project with members of the Centre.
• Participate in one of the research groups and/or disciplines within GAC (e.g seminars, workshops, conferences).
• Co-author an article or other publication with a member of the Centre.
• Develop a research proposal to apply for an external funding award.
• Contribute to the research activities and/or graduate program by holding a special seminar or similar activity.

C. Role of Academic Host from GAC

It is essential for the visitor to have identified and corresponded with an academic host who is a GAC member (professor, lecturer, researcher or PhD candidate) before submitting his/her formal application. The host is obliged to ensure that the visitor is integrated into the work of the Centre so that they can benefit fully from their stay. Before agreeing to act in this capacity, prospective hosts are encouraged to read the following guidelines:

Hosts at GAC are expected to:
• Communicate with the guest researcher prior to their formal application to the GAC to discuss collaboration and activities that would be appropriate for proposal on the Guest Researchers’ Application Form.
• Play an active role in the introduction of the Guest Researcher to the GAC environment, including providing introductions to relevant colleagues and informing the guest of activities that they may wish to participate in (research groups, research seminars, workshops, informal gatherings).
• Engage the Guest Researcher in co-authoring publications, organizing and participating in events and developing contacts and networks.
• It is the responsibility of the host to make the practical arrangements for receiving the new Guest Researcher.

D. Finance

This Guest Research Program contributes to the funding for travel and accommodation costs for a limited number of Guests. Each applicant must motivate their request for funding in the application. The GAC does not provide a salary to Guest Researchers. Additional funding may often be required and the guest researcher and/or host should normally apply for research funding schemes through their home department or other funders.

E. Guest Researcher Profiles, Reporting and Feedback

Guest Researchers will be asked to provide GAC with a short biography and a statement of what they intend to do during their visit before they arrive; this information is posted on the research section of the GAC website.

At the end of the stay the Guest Researcher and host at GAC are asked to provide feedback on the outcome of the visit.

F. Procedures

Before completing an application form, prospective Guest Researchers need to identify and contact a full member of GAC who is willing to act as their host. Prospective Guest Researchers should discuss with their host the possibilities of contributing to GAC in their area of research and this should be included on the application form.

The host will be involved in inducting their approved Guest Researcher into GAC, particularly by introducing them to research groups, key GAC members and graduate students and they should provide guidance and contacts for the duration of the visitor’s stay.

Applicants must complete the Guest Researchers’ Program Application Form and send it, along with a research proposal, CV and a letter of support from an established GAC member, to the GAC coordinator Erik Thomson (erik.thomson@chem.gu.se).

Submission can be made at any time during the year.
The contribution from GAC is during 2017 limited to 25 000 SEK per visitor.
Applications will be considered by the Board of GAC.
