Nathalia Thygesen Veci: "Mobile Optical Remote Sensing for quantification of Ammonia and Methane emissions from Dairy Farms"
Solar occultation flux (SOF) and Mobile extractive FTIR (MeFTIR) techniques have been used for over 20 years to quantify industrial emissions of VOCs, CH4, and others, from refineries in the USA, Europe, and Asia. In this study, they were applied to measure NH3 and CH4 emissions from livestock operations. In California, two field campaigns performed in May and October studied 14 single dairy feedlot operations, which are significant sources of NH3 and CH4 in the San Joaquin Valley. Emissions obtained were compared to national inventories and other similar measurements. The study contributed to the understanding of dairy farm emissions, and to strengthen the role of optical remote sensing techniques as a bridge to the gap between satellites and fixed farm measurements.
Cole Brachmann: "Impacts of herbivore on mycorrhizal dynamics in the subarctic"
Mycorrhizal fungi are mutualistic symbionts integral to plant communities as they enhance plant¿s ability to gather nutrients and thrive in their environment. Climate change is causing shifts in subarctic plant communities, specifically an increase in evergreen and deciduous shrubs. These shrubs are associated with different mycorrhizal fungi and their prevalence will have a large impact on carbon storage in the soil. An increase in evergreen shrubs will result in increased carbon storage, while an increase in deciduous shrubs will reduce soil carbon storage. Herbivory may be a key determinant in the prevalence of either shrub type, thereby determining the future for soil carbon storage, however, this relationship has not been explicitly tested across the subarctic. I aim to determine the role of herbivory on mycorrhizae dynamics in circumpolar subarctic communities.
