An arena for sustainable development in West Sweden - the next step in GMV:s development

News: Jun 20, 2022

A project to redefine the mission of Gothenburg Centre for Sustainable Development (GMV) has been ongoing since October 2021. On 16 June, the President at Chalmers University of Technology and the Vice-chancellor at the University of Gothenburg took a decision to proceed with the intention to develop GMV to become an arena for sustainable development in West Sweden. The collaboration “Lärosäten Väst” will form the foundation for the new arena.

The project to change GMV is led by Pam Fredman, Acting director at GMV, on behalf of the President at Chalmers and the Vice-chancellor at the University of Gothenburg. Now the President and the Vice-chancellor have decided on the next steps in the development of GMV.

An arena for sustainable development in West Sweden

The President and the Vice-chancellor decided on the 16 June to move forward with the intention to develop GMV to become an arena for sustainable development in West Sweden. The new organisation will be based on experiences from GMV, Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg as well as those from other actors in West Sweden. The arena is suggested to be based on the collaboration “Lärosäten Väst”, which was established by six universities in West Sweden in March 2021.

According to the project’s proposal that has now been decided upon, the purpose of the new arena is to bring together academia with other societal actors in order to jointly develop and utilize knowledge and competences to strengthen society's capacity and ability to drive the transition towards sustainable development.

– I look forward to working with Lärosäten Väst to create an arena for sustainable development in West Sweden where an inclusive and trustful collaboration between the universities and external actors is developed. This way, we can build a shared responsibility for sustainable development in society, today and for the future, locally and regionally with national and international perspectives, says Pam Fredman.

Activities is being moved to other parts of the University of Gothenburg

The decisions by the President and the Vice-chancellor on 16 June also means that the activities responsible for the environmental management system at the University of Gothenburg will be moved from GMV to a newly established support function for sustainable development at the University with the mission to run, coordinate and support the University's sustainability work. Activities within Green Economy and other activities related to the School of Business, Economics and Law will also be moved from GMV, to EfD – Environment for Development at the University of Gothenburg.

The changes are due to be implemented by 1 January 2023.
