This autumn, Chalmers University of Technology's and the University of Gothenburg's annual sustainability week Act Sustainable is back. This time focusing on the connections and exchange between the social and ecological climate with the theme: Democracy in a Changing Climate. The week begins with an opening lecture by Staffan Ingmar Lindberg, Director of Varieties of Democracy Institute (V-Dem) at the University of Gothenburg.

Act Sustainable 2022 begins with an opening lecture by Staffan Ingmar Lindberg, Director of Varieties of Democracy Institute (V-Dem) at the University of Gothenburg. V-Dem is a world leader in democracy research with its annual Democracy Report, which is based on one of the world's largest data collection projects.
The report describes the state of democracy in the world and points to trends through historical comparisons. With a multidimensional approach, the report is based on several democratic principles to measure democracy as objectively and accurately as possible.
In this year's report, Democracy Report 2022: Autocratization Changing Nature?, the authors highlight, among other things, how democracy is in decline and the autocracies on the rise. Today, 70 percent of the world's population lives in an autocracy. In ten years, the world has been sent back over 30 years in time, to levels as they were in 1989. The methods of autocracies have also changed. Processes that were previously more cautious have been replaced by bolder and more powerful methods that, for instance, manifests in more coups.
This year V-Dem launched the Case for Democracy program. An initiative that will compile the latest research on the benefits of democratic societies. What effects does democracy have on, for example: education, welfare, the environment and the economy? Is democracy a prerequisite for sustainable development? The goal is to broadly strengthen the defenders of democracy around the world with data and knowledge. A new tool to counter false information and misconceptions.
During his opening lecture, Staffan Ingmar Lindberg will talk about both the report, Democracy Report 2022: Autocratization Changing Nature?, and the Case for Democracy program. The lecture will be the starting point for Act Sustainable, Chalmers University of Technology's and the University of Gothenburg's joint sustainability week for students, researchers, teachers, and other staff during November 14–18 at Studenternas Hus.
Registrations for Act Sustainable open in September. However, students who want to arrange a student led session on Act Sustainable can contact Karin Bylund, project manager for Act Sustainable, and researchers and doctoral students who want to contribute to the Act Sustainable Reseach Conference can contribute with their proposals. The conference is part of the sustainability week and this year’s theme is: Sustainability in times of declining democracy and increasing polarization: What knowledge and actions do we need?
Through Act Sustainable's theme 2022: Democracy in a changing climate, the ambition is to explore the connections between the social and ecological climate. How do these areas affect each other and what synergies can be seen in their respective development over time? What are the social effects of the climate crisis and what social aspects are driving the climate crisis? How does the lack of, or access to, human rights, democracy, inclusion, peace, and equality affect the climate, and vice versa?
