From November 9-11 GAC helped to sponsor an interdisciplinary snow workshop at the GVC. More than 30 scientists from 8 countries attended to discuss the state of knowledge and a network with regard to ongoing Arctic snow studies being conducted on Svalbard.
Workshop organizer Mats P. Björkman commented, “Scientists tend to put their head into the snow with only their own specific questions in mind, generating a lot of data that cannot be used in a broader perspective. What we try to do is to open up the different disciplines (involving physical, chemical, biological and atmospheric aspects), homologize the sampling procedures so we in the end can generate a better understanding of the Arctic snowpack and what impacts a changing climate will have on these sensitive areas.”.
A workshop summary and working group website are currently in progress. More information will be posted when available.
